Slow. Practical. Art.

Our Azulejos Production Process: From Clay to Artwork
How are our tiles made? A question we often receive. Below you can read about the steps taken to turn each tile into a unique piece of art - from the moment the clay arrives.

01
Preparation of the clay
The clay is carefully selected and prepared by mixing and kneading it. This process is essential to achieve the right texture and consistency, making the tiles durable and easy to work with in the subsequent stages of production. Each tile we deliver measures 15 by 15 cm.
02
Shaping the tiles
Using molds, the tiles are shaped. Our craftsmen give each tile its specific form and size. This is a delicate process where precision and attention to detail are crucial.

03
Drying
The formed tiles are then dried to remove excess moisture. A slow drying process ensures that the tiles do not crack or deform.
04
Bisque firing
After drying, the tiles undergo a first firing phase, known as 'bisque firing.' This initial low-temperature firing process strengthens the tiles before they are painted.

05
Painting
One of the most striking and appealing features of Portuguese Azulejos is the hand-painting. Each tile is adorned with natural pigments in color combinations. Every combination is possible, so if you have a design in mind, we can bring it to life!
06
Glaze baking
After the painting, the tiles undergo another firing, this time at higher temperatures to melt the glaze and provide a glossy finish. This process not only enhances the colors but also ensures the tiles are durable and resistant to external influences.

07
Finishing and quality control
Each tile undergoes a thorough inspection to ensure that the quality meets the highest standards. Any imperfections are corrected, and the tiles are trimmed or polished if necessary to ensure a perfect final product.
08
Packaging and distribution
Are the Azulejos ready? Then, they are carefully packaged and prepared for distribution. They are shipped worldwide to adorn homes, buildings, and public spaces with their timeless beauty and craftsmanship.
